These things are arranged as part of the care package rather than simply assumed, so it is important to raise them early, at the assessment stage, and to be clear about what is needed.\n\nWhat a carer is not, of course, is a full-time pet carer. Their role centres on your loved one. But supporting the pet where it is part of your loved one's daily life and wellbeing is a very reasonable thing to build into the care plan, and we are always happy to discuss it.\n\n\nSupporting your loved one to care for their pet\n\nHere is something worth holding on to. Wherever possible, the aim is not for a carer to take over the pet, but to help your loved one continue looking after it themselves.\n\nThat sense of responsibility, of being needed by a creature who depends on you, is part of what makes a pet so valuable. So a good carer supports rather than replaces: coming along on the walk to give confidence and a steadying arm, helping with the heavier bag of food, being on hand at the vet. Your loved one stays the owner. They simply get a bit of help.\n\n\nMatching matters here, too\n\nIf there is a pet in the home, it is important that the carer is comfortable with animals, and this is something we take into account when matching.\n\nWe will ask about pets from the start, so we can find a carer who is happy in a home with a dog or a cat, has no allergies, and is content to help as agreed. Many of our carers are animal lovers themselves, and a carer who genuinely takes to your loved one's pet often becomes part of a very happy household.\n\n\nA few practical points\n\n * Mention pets at the assessment, along with any help that would be useful, so it can be properly planned for.\n * Think about safety. Pets underfoot are a genuine trip hazard for someone unsteady, so it is worth thinking about how to keep walkways clear. A carer can help manage this.\n * Consider the routine. Feeding, walking, litter trays, medication and vet appointments all take a little organising, and can be built into the daily rhythm.\n * Plan ahead. It is worth having a conversation, gently, about who would look after the pet if your loved one became unable to. Knowing there is a plan is reassuring for everyone.\n\n\nA happier home all round\n\nThere is one more benefit worth mentioning. A home with a pet in it is a home with life in it. Animals lift the mood of a household, give everyone something to talk about and smile at, and often help a new carer and your loved one bond in those first days.\n\n\nThe whole household, cared for\n\nKeeping a beloved pet is not a small thing, and it should never be treated as one. For many older people, staying with their animal is one of the most compelling reasons of all to remain at home.\n\nLive-in care makes that possible: your loved one supported, their pet beside them, and the household they love kept happily intact.\n\nIf you would like to talk through how live-in care could work for your loved one and their pet, we would be glad to help.\n\nBook a free care advice call, or give us a ring on 020 3970 9900. We are always happy to help.","primary_tag":{"name":"Life with a live-in carer"},"slug":"pets-and-live-in-care-keeping-the-whole-household-comfortable","publishedDisplay":"15 Jul 2026","updatedDisplay":"23 Jul 2026","publishedIso":"2026-07-15T10:39:20.000+00:00","updatedIso":"2026-07-23T12:55:26.000+00:00","feature_image_sharp":{"childImageSharp":{"gatsbyImageData":{"layout":"constrained","backgroundColor":"#f8f8f8","images":{"fallback":{"src":"/static/28b867b30712aa1d5119e4bccaf6ee30/f19bc/getty-images-nhPlEo03JcE-unsplash.jpg","srcSet":"/static/28b867b30712aa1d5119e4bccaf6ee30/26cfb/getty-images-nhPlEo03JcE-unsplash.jpg 500w,\n/static/28b867b30712aa1d5119e4bccaf6ee30/1b035/getty-images-nhPlEo03JcE-unsplash.jpg 1000w,\n/static/28b867b30712aa1d5119e4bccaf6ee30/f19bc/getty-images-nhPlEo03JcE-unsplash.jpg 2000w","sizes":"(min-width: 2000px) 2000px, 100vw"},"sources":[{"srcSet":"/static/28b867b30712aa1d5119e4bccaf6ee30/921bf/getty-images-nhPlEo03JcE-unsplash.webp 500w,\n/static/28b867b30712aa1d5119e4bccaf6ee30/b7ef5/getty-images-nhPlEo03JcE-unsplash.webp 1000w,\n/static/28b867b30712aa1d5119e4bccaf6ee30/c9c6a/getty-images-nhPlEo03JcE-unsplash.webp 2000w","type":"image/webp","sizes":"(min-width: 2000px) 2000px, 100vw"}]},"width":2000,"height":1333}}},"primary_author":{"bio":"Communications and Marketing Lead","name":"Jamie Shie","slug":"jamie","profile_image_sharp":{"childImageSharp":{"gatsbyImageData":{"layout":"constrained","backgroundColor":"#383838","images":{"fallback":{"src":"/static/4ce69bfa95322a3b177d8c8b946cc319/2e55b/Screenshot-2026-06-22-at-09.28.27.png","srcSet":"/static/4ce69bfa95322a3b177d8c8b946cc319/5fbde/Screenshot-2026-06-22-at-09.28.27.png 132w,\n/static/4ce69bfa95322a3b177d8c8b946cc319/6672c/Screenshot-2026-06-22-at-09.28.27.png 264w,\n/static/4ce69bfa95322a3b177d8c8b946cc319/2e55b/Screenshot-2026-06-22-at-09.28.27.png 528w","sizes":"(min-width: 528px) 528px, 100vw"},"sources":[{"srcSet":"/static/4ce69bfa95322a3b177d8c8b946cc319/df6d7/Screenshot-2026-06-22-at-09.28.27.webp 132w,\n/static/4ce69bfa95322a3b177d8c8b946cc319/5bda5/Screenshot-2026-06-22-at-09.28.27.webp 264w,\n/static/4ce69bfa95322a3b177d8c8b946cc319/3155f/Screenshot-2026-06-22-at-09.28.27.webp 528w","type":"image/webp","sizes":"(min-width: 528px) 528px, 100vw"}]},"width":528,"height":466}}}}},"relatedPosts":{"nodes":[{"title":"Libraries and Community Groups: Keeping a Parent Socially Active","slug":"libraries-and-community-groups-keeping-a-parent-socially-active","feature_image_sharp":{"childImageSharp":{"gatsbyImageData":{"layout":"constrained","backgroundColor":"#080808","images":{"fallback":{"src":"/static/a1a296bb32d53cf566de3a51726ddba6/8f95c/centre-for-ageing-better-Yg9Mj6ji3YA-unsplash.jpg","srcSet":"/static/a1a296bb32d53cf566de3a51726ddba6/28380/centre-for-ageing-better-Yg9Mj6ji3YA-unsplash.jpg 500w,\n/static/a1a296bb32d53cf566de3a51726ddba6/1b035/centre-for-ageing-better-Yg9Mj6ji3YA-unsplash.jpg 1000w,\n/static/a1a296bb32d53cf566de3a51726ddba6/8f95c/centre-for-ageing-better-Yg9Mj6ji3YA-unsplash.jpg 2000w","sizes":"(min-width: 2000px) 2000px, 100vw"},"sources":[{"srcSet":"/static/a1a296bb32d53cf566de3a51726ddba6/76f01/centre-for-ageing-better-Yg9Mj6ji3YA-unsplash.webp 500w,\n/static/a1a296bb32d53cf566de3a51726ddba6/b7ef5/centre-for-ageing-better-Yg9Mj6ji3YA-unsplash.webp 1000w,\n/static/a1a296bb32d53cf566de3a51726ddba6/d6ae7/centre-for-ageing-better-Yg9Mj6ji3YA-unsplash.webp 2000w","type":"image/webp","sizes":"(min-width: 2000px) 2000px, 100vw"}]},"width":2000,"height":1334}}},"excerpt":"Staying socially active is one of the very best things for an older person's health, happiness and sense of purpose.
